Dog Obedience training

... is one of the best things you can do for your dog - it is the foundation of integrating your dog into your household, it opens the line of communication between the two of you and, more importantly, it can save her life.

The simple “stay” command can stop your dog from bolting out the door, running into traffic or entering a dangerous place. Other commands such as “sit” or “off” keep dogs from acting like animals (pardon the pun).

Because dogs are naturally social creatures, they are eager to jump all over anyone who enters their territory either to greet or to intimidate. “Off” is a useful tool in this kind of situation. However, obedience training is also a way for you to create a social hierarchy within the family. This is important because if she is not taught her place within the family unit, behavioral problems can occur.

Dog obedience training should always be followed with hugs and treats. When your dog does something right, you reward her. If she does something wrong; however, reprimand her in a strong voice. Training will come easily to a dog that enjoys the experience and there is no better way to make a dog like learning than feeding her goodies. In addition, knowing your dog’s limitations will also help the process along. Dogs have a very short attention span, so keeping your training sessions short will help the dog stay alert during the lesson, therefore helping her learn quicker. If you are unsure as to what type of commands you should teach your dog, there are many helpful books available at the library or sites on the Internet.

And remember - it’s never too late to start.
